Designed by the wild, to be wild

Most of what gets written about honeybees these days comes out of the Northern Hemisphere, and it usually starts from the same premise: bees are struggling, colonies are collapsing, and someone needs to invent a fix. What rarely gets asked is why Western bees got so fragile in the first place — and why that story looks so different here in South Africa.

We think it comes down to a basic difference in mindset. A lot of modern beekeeping treats a hive like a piece of equipment: something to be managed, optimised and made to produce. We've never seen it that way. A hive isn't ours. It's a wild colony that has chosen, for now, to live in a box we built for them — and everything about how we build and manage that box comes from trying to respect that arrangement rather than override it.

Two Very Different Bees

In Europe and North America, honeybees have been bred hard for generations, mostly for two traits: high honey yield and a gentle, easy-to-handle temperament. Both are useful if you're running a large commercial pollination or honey operation, where thousands of hives need to be handled quickly and safely by staff who may not be experienced apiarists. But selecting that hard for yield and gentleness tends to select out the traits a bee actually needs to survive without human intervention — aggressive self-grooming that physically dislodges Varroa mites, and a strong instinct to gather plant resin and seal the nest with it. Western commercial stock has also had a lot of its migratory instinct bred out of it, so a colony tends to stay put in a failing hive rather than moving on, simply because that's more convenient for the keeper. The result is a bee that produces well under close supervision but has lost much of its ability to look after itself the moment that supervision slips — which is a large part of why colony collapse has become such a persistent, expensive problem overseas.

South African bees never went through that filter. Apis mellifera scutellata and the Cape bee, Apis mellifera capensis, are still largely wild and genetically diverse, because commercial breeding programmes here are the exception rather than the rule. They groom obsessively, biting mites off themselves and off each other. Their brood caps slightly faster than European bees, which shortens the window a female Varroa mite has to mature and reproduce inside the cell before the bee emerges. And if a hive genuinely stops working for them — too damp, too exposed, too infested — they leave. Absconding looks alarming to a keeper used to docile European stock, but it isn't a flaw in the bee. It's the emergency exit that keeps a bad situation from running all the way to collapse. A well-managed hive simply gives them no reason to use it, and that's really the whole test of whether you're keeping bees properly or just keeping a box with bees in it.

Put a poorly bred bee in poor hive management, and you get colony collapse. Put a wild, well-adapted bee in a home that respects what it already knows how to do, and it mostly takes care of itself. We'd also add a less comfortable observation: a lot of beekeepers, here and abroad, are hobbyists first and biologists a distant second, and that gap in understanding is often what turns a manageable problem into a collapsed colony. Every decision below comes from trying to close that gap ourselves, rather than assume the bees are the ones getting it wrong.

How We Build

Rough on the inside, on purpose. When a wild honeybee colony nests in a hollow tree, it doesn't just move in and start storing honey. First, it goes to work sealing the place — coating the entire cavity, bark and all, in propolis, a resin gathered from tree buds and plant sap. That coating, known as the propolis envelope, is antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral, and it acts as a kind of external immune system for the whole colony. Most manufactured hive boxes are machined smooth on every face, purely because smooth wood is easier for a human to scrape and clean between seasons. Unfortunately, that's also exactly the surface bees are least motivated to propolise — a smooth wall doesn't trigger the instinct the way rough does. So on every box and catch box we make, we leave the inside faces rough, straight off the mill, and only machine the outside smooth for handling and appearance. The bees don't particularly like the rough texture underfoot, so they get to work fixing it — with propolis, exactly as they would in a hollow tree. It costs us nothing extra to leave that surface alone, yet it encourages the colony to create that propolis envelope that is so important to their immune system, a defense mechanism western and European beekeepers quietly and slowly took away from them. 

Reclaimed Baltic pine, not fresh-cut softwood. Our boxes are built from reclaimed Baltic pine, collected from the harbour — timber that already lived a full life as shipping dunnage and packaging, and would otherwise have gone straight to a fire. It's slower-grown and tighter-grained than the fast-grown softwood typically sold for hive-building, and having already spent years drying out as dunnage, it's exceptionally well seasoned and stable, which matters a great deal once a hive is sitting out through a South African summer — baking sun, sudden storms, and the swelling and shrinking that untreated fresh timber never quite settles down from. Using reclaimed material also means we're not cutting fresh trees to build something whose entire purpose is to support wild pollinators, which fits how we'd rather do business generally: use what already exists properly, rather than consume more than we need to.

Boiling Waxsol, not paint. Once a box is machined, it doesn't get painted — it gets dipped whole into boiling Waxsol. Painting only ever puts a thin film on the surface of the wood, and that film eventually cracks, peels and lets moisture in underneath, especially in direct sun. Dipping in boiling waxsole works completely differently: the heat drives residual moisture out of the wood cells and pulls the oil deep into the grain itself, rather than just sitting on top of it. Pulling the piece out while it's still hot lets the excess oil run off cleanly, leaving a dry surface with no tacky residue for bees or beekeeper to deal with. There's no chemical preservative leaching into the hive over time — thanks to the bees adding their thick layer of propolis to the surface-, driven properly into the timber, built to protect the wood for decades rather than a season or two. It's a slower, more deliberate process than reaching for a tin of paint, or applying oil cold, and that's rather the point: we'd sooner spend the extra time once and have it last, than do it quickly and redo it in three years.

We facilitate them, we don't own them. A well-managed colony has little genuine reason to abscond, and giving them that reason is almost always on us, not them. That means a dry, weatherproof cavity, real protection from ants, correct bee spacing to prevent hive beetle and other pests, and enough space that the colony never feels congested and crowded out of its own home. If, despite all of that, we need to accept reality, South African beekeepers work with a particularly aggressive honeybee, due to their wild genetics, and sometimes a colony's genetics are simply too defensive to work safely, we rather leave it alone. Some wild lines are hardwired to defend aggressively no matter how carefully they're handled, and that's not a problem to be solved — it's a boundary worth respecting, both for our own safety and because that same fierce temperament is often tied to the genetic resilience that makes South African bees so hardy in the first place.

A Tip to Consider when working- Smoke, used properly, the whole time you're working. For the colonies that can be worked, smoke is the tool that makes it possible, but only if it's used correctly. Smoke's job isn't to "calm" bees the way people often assume — it masks the alarm pheromone bees release to warn each other of danger, and it only works for as long as it's actually drifting through the air. A single puff at the entrance before opening the lid wears off within minutes, which is exactly when most inexperienced keepers get stung and start to loose control, because they assume the job is done. We keep a light, continuous stream of smoke going for the entire time we're in a hive.. we are not suffocating them, we're simply keeping the smell of smoke in the air, periodically puffing cool smoke over the bees- move slowly and deliberately rather than in the quick, jerky motions that trigger a defensive response, and take real care not to squash bees in the process — a squashed bee releases a burst of alarm pheromone strong enough to undo all of that careful smoking in seconds. Done properly, and combined with a real willingness to walk away from the colonies that are best left alone, it's the difference that makes even our more defensive hives workable.

The Short Version

Western beekeeping spent decades breeding the resilience out of its bees, then went looking for ways to buy that resilience back with feeding supplements and increasingly complex management. South African bees never lost that resilience to begin with. Our job isn't to replace what they already know how to do — it's to build them a home that gets out of their way and lets them do it: rough where it counts, correct spacing and placement, along with honest materials, and the patience to work with a wild bee on its own terms rather than trying to bend it to ours. We don't own our bees. We just try to facilitate their natural tendencies, so that they choose to stay.
